The stage is set. The teams have been announced. The premiere of Driver vs Driver, airing exclusively on Golf Channel, is less than three weeks away.
“Driver vs. Driver” will detail the journey of aspiring golf club designers as they compete for a $500,000 grand prize from Wilson Staff. Not only will the winning design team bring home half-a-million dollars, but they will also have their design conceptualized and eventually sold under the iconic Wilson Staff name this winter.
Wilson Golf initially offered the opportunity for aspiring designers to submit driver designs in the Fall of 2015. After receiving hundreds of submissions, the field was narrowed to just 11 finalists.
Each team will work with Wilson Labs engineers to evaluate, critique, refine, and test their ideas and concepts, all while trying to stave off elimination by the panel of golf experts.
These select few will compete for the grand prize and the opportunity to have their innovative creations brought to life. This diverse group of designers include engineers, PhD students, a former golf professional, and an art teacher.
Judges participating in this competition will be legendary Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, former USGA Technical Director Frank Thomas, Wilson Golf President Tim Clarke, and two-time PGA TOUR winner Kevin Streelman. “When Wilson offered me the position as a judge, I jumped at the opportunity,” Urlacher said. The host of the show is the incredibly talented Melanie Collins, currently a sideline reporter for CBS’ college football and basketball coverage. Melanie also previously co-hosted the wildly popular Big Break series.

Perhaps the person most enthused about show is Wilson Golf President Tim Clarke. “Wilson Golf has a long history of innovation alongside some of the best golfers who have ever played the game,” said Clarke. “As we push golf innovation into new territories, we recognize that new ideas, materials, design elements and concepts can come from the most unexpected places, industries and people. This new television show is designed to celebrate the entrepreneurial and inventive spirit that is so important to our brand.”
