New for fall 2016 is the Callaway Steelhead XR Hybrid, a first for the storied club franchise.
With a focus on forgiveness, distance and playability, tenets of the entire family, these hybrids are playable from any lie, and as long they come. The new Hyper Speed Face Cup technology is larger than the first-gen XR hybrid, promoting more ball speed and easier launch.
The larger head and faster face is complemented by an even deeper-back CG location, further enabling an easy, controlled launch.
But the biggest design inspiration for the Steelhead XR hybrid comes from the original, versatile sole design of the irons, which made playing shots from tough lies much easier. According to Callaway, “With the help of extensive computer modeling and Tour pro testing, Callaway engineers reduced sole-to-turf friction dramatically to make it easier to launch the ball cleanly from almost any lie.”
And while the Steelhead XR takes huge inspiration from the original Steelhead X-14, as well as the modern XR family, it also breaks ground for Callaway: It’s the first hybrid in company history to feature Speed Step Technology on the crown for increased ball speed.
